Tobi Lütke, is the founder and CEO of Shopify, the leading cloud-based, multichannel commerce platform designed for small and medium-sized businesses, headquartered in Ottawa. Tobi has served on the core team of Ruby on Rails (open source software that facilitates the development of new web applications) and has created many popular open source libraries such as Active Merchant.
Tobi grew up in Germany and moved to Canada in 2002 at age 22. In 2004, he launched Snowdevil, an online snowboard shop, which he built the ecommerce platform for. Soon after, Tobi and his Snowdevil partners decided to shift from snowboards to ecommerce and officially launched Shopify in 2006.
With Shopify, merchants can design, set up, and manage their stores across multiple sales channels, including web, mobile, social media, marketplaces, brick-and-mortar locations, and pop-up shops. The platform also provides merchants with a powerful back-office and a single view of their business. Shopify currently powers over 500,000 merchants in approximately 175 countries. Shopify had its initial public offering in May 2015. It is listed on the New York and Toronto stock exchanges as SHOP.
